About the Program

About a decade ago, KCIS identified a school that served as a beacon of hope for Afghan refugee students in Iran by offering an education that transcended their challenging backgrounds. Farhang (meaning culture and civility) School was founded by Nader Mousavi, an Afghan immigrant with a master’s degree in Social Sciences from Tehran University, and started with a humble enrollment of about 50 students. Through our continued support, the school has undergone remarkable growth, now serving over 1,300 students.

Farhang School has provided an enriching educational environment for its students and the school principal has been honored with numerous national and international recognitions, including the esteemed Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) and iBbY-iRead nominations for his tireless efforts in educating the marginalized Afghan refugee community.

KCIS continues to stand as Farhang School’s most significant benefactor, covering academic costs, and granting access to an array of activities including language and computer classes, libraries, field trips, and relevant events and workshops.

We are proud to note that many of the school’s educators and staff are Farhang alumni and recent Afghan arrivals, truly embodying the complete cycle of support nurtured by our organization.

In 2022, a significant milestone was achieved when KCIS and Farhang School purchased a school building in the outskirts of Tehran dedicated exclusively to Afghan students to address the needs of the larger Afghan community. The school is named Farhang-Amin, a tribute to the generous contributions from the Amin family who made this effort possible.
